A copy of the NCCU Law Library Emergency Plan is also located at the Service Desk pinned to the bulletin board, as well as in the back of the physical desk manual (black 3-ring binder beneath the bulletin board).
Fire Alarm
When the fire alarm is activated, immediately evacuate the building. Warn students to leave as you are exiting the building.
Stay in the designated evacuation site until you are given the okay to re-enter the building. The designated evacuation site is the Criminal Justice building lawn. Check in with Library Administration.
Fire
In the event of an actual fire that has not yet activated the alarm, employees will alert and evacuate people in the area, activate the nearest fire alarm, and call x6106.
Once the alarm is activated, normal evacuation procedures should be followed.
Utility Failure
Utility failures generally occur building wide. If there is a utility failure during the weekday hours of operation, follow directions given by the law school administration.
If there is a utility issue such as the air conditioner breaking or a bathroom flooding, let library staff know immediately.
Adverse Weather
Adverse weather conditions may prevent individuals from entering or leaving campus. Notice of a decision to close or delay opening NCCU will be communicated ASAP by email, phone trees, local radio and television stations. Call 919-530-7220 for recorded information.
In the event of a tornado, alert students as you make your way to the basement of the law building. Avoid windows. Do not use elevators.
Workplace Injuries and Accidents
Call NCCU Police at x6106. You may provide first aid if you are trained, it is safe to do so, and the injured party consents. Do not attempt to move an injured person unless it is necessary to prevent further injury. Remain as calm as possible.
Assist emergency personnel in locating the victim and investigating the incident.
Crime
To report a crime or criminal behavior in progress, call x6106. Do not approach or attempt to apprehend persons involved. Take only actions necessary for self-defense. If you are safe, stay where you are until the police arrive. Otherwise, try to move to a safe location.
To report non-emergency police related activities or crimes no longer in progress, call x6106.
Active Shooter
In the event of an active shooter situation, evacuate only if you are certain it is safe to do so, otherwise shelter in place. Remember there are emergency exits located at the back of the reading room on the first floor and on the upper floor between study rooms 6 and 7 and next to the Law Review office. Close and lock doors, lower blinds, and turn off lights. Call x6106 and provide any information possible. Remain in place until contacted by police with further instructions.
Earthquake
Though earthquakes are not a high risk in this area, they are possible here.
If you are inside the building and feel it shaking or swaying: Duck or drop to the floor.
Cover yourself under a piece of heavy furniture, or in a doorway. If this is not possible, position yourself against an interior wall, protecting your head and neck with your arms. Avoid appliances, windows, and heavy hanging objects.
Evacuate the building if directed.
