Pathways to Practice Resources

Welcome to Pathways to Practice --

NCCU School of Law’s Externship Program!

Pathways to Practice is designed to enhance traditional classroom instruction by engaging students in real life lawyering experiences with practicing lawyers and judges through an externship. Pathways to Practice is a two-part class that supports and guides students in their externship through classroom instruction and by providing practical tools for professional development within the legal field. Students receive academic credit for participating in one of our partner placements for a set number of hours for the semester, as well as completion of class requirements through the Pathways to Practice course.

Important Course Notes:

  • Priority selection will be given to unpaid/public interest placements.
  • Securing an internship does not entitle or guarantee placement in Pathways to Practice.
  • Pathways to Practice is a course that comprises of class instruction, assignments, discussion, written reflection, and simulations.
  • As part of Pathways to Practice, employers and students must allot time for class as it is a required component of the externship program.
  • Pathways to Practice for the summer is a dual-semester class that spans over summer sessions I and II.
  • For summer enrollment, credits for the class will be applied to Summer Session II. This means that if you are requesting five (5) credits for Pathways to Practice, you will not be able to enroll in any other classes for summer session II since you will be at your summer semester cap.
  • Additionally, students will receive financial aid for Pathways to Practice for summer enrollment during summer session II NOT summer session I.
  • All field placement hours must be completed during this time of semester enrollment.
