Generally, if a seafarer falls ill or is injured while working on the ship, they are entitled to maintenance and cure. In some cases, this will also include illness and injury occurring while ashore. Maintenance and cure can include three types of recovery: maintenance (living expenses), cure (medical expenses), and wages. Legislation such as the Jones Act also provides for recovery for seafarers when injured in the course of their employment by negligence.
