Fall 2022 Legal Design Derby

The NCCU Technology Law & Policy Center and the Duke Center on Law & Technology co-hosted the Legal Design Derby on Saturday, October 22, 2022. Six teams of students from NCCU, Duke, Elon, Campbell, and Wake Forest law schools participated in the Legal Design Derby. After holding the Derby virtually in 2020 and 2021, this year’s program was held at the new NCCU Student Center. The students used human-centered design principles to develop and refine a prototype that answered the question, “How might students and law schools prepare for future paradigms of legal service delivery.”

Faculty members from Duke and Wake Forest Law schools served as facilitators to assist students with their presentations. Additional guidance was provided by practicing attorneys and trained design thinking leaders Diane Littlejohn, Executive Director of the NCCU Technology Law and Policy Center, and NCCU Law Student Hillary Teoyotl. Duke Staff and Executive Director Diane Littlejohn planned and coordinated the event. Four NCCU Law Students participated.

At the end of the full-day session, the students presented their concepts in groups. Concepts ranged from multi-tiered legal services to legal apps to assist those experiencing domestic violence. Winners won a cash prize.
