Legislative History

This LibGuide will help users locate documents and conduct legislative history research at North Carolina Central University School of Law's Library.

What are compiled legislative histories?

With many pieces of major legislation, individuals will collect all of the documents leading to the creation of the legislation and bind them together to form a compiled legislative history volume.  If this has been done for the legislation being researched,  the researcher's work is completed for them.  Compiled legislative histories can be located in print through the Law Library's catalog and through various electronic resources.

When looking for a compiled legislative history in the Law Library's catalog, try using these strategies:

  • conducting a word search for "legislative history" and the name of your legislation
  • conducting a word search for "compiled legislative history"

Compiled legislative histories can also be located in law review or journal articles.  To locate these articles, use a tool such as HeinOnline, Lexis+, or Westlaw Edge.

The Law Library also maintains several major publications containing legislative history compilations aside from works about specific pieces of legislation.  These publications are detailed below.
